I don’t see spiders killing one and other in my name or disputing my existence. Sometimes I don’t exist to them, then un-announced I enter their world and crush them… or not. The spiders exist happily, having never known of my existence, though some fall fowl of my wrath.

What kind of culture are we a part of, where whores and slags are worshipped, gambling is considered an honourable career, where kids are encouraged to give up education in favour of playing a schoolyard game, then rewarded a lifetime’s riches for an hour’s exercise, only to abuse their wealth by excess, leading to assault and manslaughter, wife-beating and public disgrace. Where those youths without goals and without respect are allowed to run riot without fear of retribution? Too many people idolise false idols and worship mother fame, seeing it as their only way out of mediocrity, while doing nothing deserve it, anymore than deserve the respect of the next generation….

Discrimination? “I  s**t  it!”

I have lived my life on the fringes of society, in the constant pursuit of ‘something different’. My life choices have included some body modification, including facial piercings and visible tattoos. These choices have undoubtedly shaped my life and my 41 years have been a constant struggle to overcome prejudice of ‘the Masses’ (only to find the very same discriminators now embracing my sub-cultures as a part of their mass-culture on the whole). However I was recently shocked and appauled by the attitude of a prospective employer, during an interview with me.

I had been forced to apply for a menial driving job (delivering cars for Vauxhall) which was minimum wage and on a ‘casual’ basis. Upon interview I explained that I was available 5 out of 7 days each week, totally flexible and had a clean driving license. On top of this I added that I was currently delivering motorbikes for a company and that I had my own business. I felt sure the mention of my degree, own home and own business would impress the interviewer. I was assured a place on the team but as I left the office I was instructed to ‘remove my lip and nose studs’ for work. I was a little shocked but agreed. I enquired about my ear tunnels and tattoos. I was told that the Branch Manager ‘wouldn’t have let me into the interview’ as he was ‘not a fan of that kind of thing’. I was slightly speechless, as I hadn’t made any personal comments regarding the interviewer’s hideously cheesy comb-over hair or wearing of a nasty gold necklace, but confident of my abilities I moved on and waited to hear from Vauxhall.

I had represented Vauxhall some years before, when launching a new model around the UK and had been rewarded with a handsome wage in excess of £150 per hour, with glowing references. Therefore I was sure of securing such a basic job within the same company… surely?!

Several weeks passed when I finally received a letter explaining that I wasn’t going to be offered a position… delivering cars for a minimum wage of £5.30 ph.

I am in no doubt that the job eluded me purely due to the prejudice of the interviewer, as no other reason was given. The struggle against narrow minds never ends!!
